I can appreciate (UC)LA Times reporter Lisa Dillman's articles this past week emphasizing "local" swimmers qualifying for the 2008 Olympics. I think that it is fantastic that Amanda Beard qualified for the Olympic team by finishing second in the 200 meter breaststroke yesterday July 4th. But who finished first, in the third best time ever for a 200 meter breaststroke race? USC TROJAN Rebecca Soni!
No mention that Rebecca is a USC Trojan. I'm sure if Rebacca were a Bruin, Lisa would have at least mentioned that fact, along with some indepth information, instead of what she wrote: "Amanda Beard, the Irvine native who made her fourth Olympic team Friday night, after placing second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.13 behind Rebecca Soni's 2:22.60." No personal information, picture or quote from Rebecca, whatsoever!
USC is located in downtown Los Angeles. How much more "local" can you get?
